Urea is the major nitrogen-containing substance in animal urine and plays a significant role in the metabolism of nitrogen-containing substances by animals. It is a , substance that is highly soluble in water and virtually non-toxic. It is neither acidic nor alkaline when dissolved in water. It is used by the body in a variety of functions, the most notable of which is nitrogen excretion. In the urea cycle, the liver creates it by mixing two ammonia molecules (NH3) with a carbon dioxide (CO2) molecule. Urea is a common source of nitrogen (N) in fertilizers and an important raw ingredient in the chemical industry.
